Midwifery E-book Resources
From the E-Book Foundry
In 2013, the professors of McMaster University’s Midwifery Education Program turned the lack of reasonably priced quality educational resources for their students into an opportunity to produce better, cheaper educational materials.
Four years later, the authors, illustrators and editors who populate McMaster’s e-Book Foundry have already created three e-books enhanced with multiple integrated features including interactive quizzes, didactic videos, and customized content.
We partner with professors to author our chapters, design the enhanced content in-house, and collaborate with students to evaluate the results. This enables us to produce high-quality, cost-effective, and engaging educational resources for midwifery students and professionals everywhere.
Textbooks include:
The skills of physical assessment of the well woman and newborn are a core competency of the midwife. The first unit of this e-book focuses on the principles and techniques needed for physical assessment of the pregnancy client during a head-to-toe examination. The second unit focuses on the basic knowledge and skills needed to assess the newborn. Both units include quizzes, case studies, and videos demonstrating examination techniques.

Administering and monitoring drugs is a core competency of the midwife. This e-book provides a basic overview of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and then builds on this knowledge to discuss drug administration in a Canadian midwifery context. Specific chapters focus on topics such as antibiotics, vaccines, analgesics and anaesthetics, and toxicology. All eight units include quizzes, case studies, animations, and videos.

In ‘Professional Roles’ we detail midwifery’s influence on health policy and health system operation to improve quality of care, and midwifery’s role in health education, whether of future midwives or recipients of care. We also focus on the role of midwife scholars as prominent researchers who build the evidence for and deepen the understanding of the impact of midwives and midwifery care. These philosophic and ethical underpinnings of midwifery care are as essential as learning about physiologic processes. Additional features include quizzes, case studies, educational activity guides, and a glossary.
This e-book outlines the best practices for care of low-risk clients and their newborns, from the first prenatal assessment to six-weeks postpartum. All content is based on the belief that pregnancy is a normal physiologic process, and each chapter provides evidence-based information to guide midwifery practice and clinical skills. Fundamental topics include: Anatomy and physiology, diagnosis and management, and decision-making. All four units include quizzes, case studies, clinical summaries, and clinical skills videos.
The final book in this three-part series, details evidence-based best practices for midwifery clinical management when variations of normal and complications arise. The book addresses management of complications throughout the childbearing cycle including pregnancy, birth, postpartum and newborn care. Fundamental topics include the role of the midwife and principles of collaborative care. Case studies, quizzes, clinical summaries and skills videos are also included.

Postpartum Emergency Department Use Following Midwifery Vs. Obstetrical Prenatal Care: A Population-Based Cohort Study Using Propensity Score-Based Overlap WeightsCarla Sorbara has worked as a registered midwife since 2006 at North York General Hospital and is currently a full-time midwife at Uptown Midwives and Family Wellness. She has worked with BORN, PCMCH and OMAMA on several quality initiatives. Emergency Department (ED) use postpartum is a common, and often-preventable, event. The current study helps to resolve an important clinical question: Can postpartum ED use be reduced in low-risk women? Our findings provide important insights into the care of the postpartum woman, both in terms of the coordination and provision of clinical care, and in terms of public health policy for new mothers. Comparisons of women in midwifery vs conventional obstetrical care have been challenging due to unmeasured confounders. We used a propensity-score based overlap weights study design to compare ED use in an unbiased fashion, and observed differences in rates of ED use between midwife and obstetrical populations. The findings help to resolve known gaps in early postpartum care typically seen in women who receive obstetrical care, suggesting that a midwifery approach of early postpartum can alleviate some ED visits. Carla presented their research on Wednesday, November 27, 2024. |

MW & Post-Abortion Care in the DRC – MMRC Research Rounds |
Midwives’ Integration of Manual Vacuum Aspiration For Post-Abortion Care In The Democratic Republic of CongoDespite a recognized need for midwives to provide post abortion care, there exist barriers preventing them from integrating lifesaving skills such as manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) into practice. This collaborative research with the Professional Association of Congolese Midwives (SCOSAF) sought to understand how certain midwives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have overcome barriers to successfully integrate MVA for post abortion care. Incorporation of equitable research processes in the DRC in collaboration with Canadian agencies is also be discussed. Dr. Kirsty Bourret is a MMRC Adjunct Scientist and faculty member with the Midwifery Education Program at Laurentian University who uses mixed methods research with a positive deviance approach, specifically in the field of midwifery and international reproductive health. Related study publication can be found here (PDF). Watch Dr. Bourret’s February 12, 2021 MMRC Research Rounds here. |
Gender and Sexuality are increasingly being considered in the design and implementation of health research studies, however, institutional and individual misconceptions still permeate these designs in ways that do not reflect people’s lived experiences.
Participants in this workshop will learn more about gender and sexuality in general, how to make data collection instruments more inclusive, and the importance of using inclusive language and frameworks in all aspects of the research process.

State of the World’s Midwifery 2021
International Day of the Midwife (IDM) occurs annually on May 5th. For this year’s IDM, we celebrated under the theme “Follow the Data: Invest in Midwives“.
Highlighting the important role that midwives play in improving sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (SRMNAH), the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA), World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) co-led a report that shows the progress and analysis of the impact of midwives on maternal and newborn health in 194 countries.
Globally, there is a shortage of 900,000 midwives. In Canada, it is estimated that approximately 9,000 midwives by 2030 will be needed to meet the sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health needs. Read the report on Canada’s profile (PDF) and how it can be used to inform policy discussions.
