MW & Post-Abortion Care in the DRC - MMRC Research Rounds
Despite a recognized need for midwives to provide post abortion care, there exist barriers preventing them from integrating lifesaving skills such as manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) into practice. This collaborative research with the Professional Association of Congolese Midwives (SCOSAF) sought to understand how certain midwives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have overcome barriers to successfully integrate MVA for post abortion care. Incorporation of equitable research processes in the DRC in collaboration with Canadian agencies is also be discussed. Dr. Kirsty Bourret is a MMRC Adjunct Scientist and faculty member with the Midwifery Education Program at Laurentian University who uses mixed methods research with a positive deviance approach, specifically in the field of midwifery and international reproductive health. Related study publication can be found here. Watch Dr. Bourret’s February 12, 2021 MMRC Research Rounds here.
Gender and Sexuality are increasingly being considered in the design and implementation of health research studies, however, institutional and individual misconceptions still permeate these designs in ways that do not reflect people's lived experiences.
Participants in this workshop will learn more about gender and sexuality in general, how to make data collection instruments more inclusive, and the importance of using inclusive language and frameworks in all aspects of the research process.

MW Students and OB Residents Learning, Understanding, & Application of Shared Decision Making - MMRC Research Rounds
Shared Decision Making (SDM) is considered a favourable method of decision making with patients for both obstetricians and midwives alike. There is minimal understanding in the literature as to how exactly students and residents understand and learn this process.
Watch Meagan Furnivall's presentation on results from her project's grounded theory study on students' perceptions of the decision making process, how students understand SDM, and factors impacting their learning from the July 15, 2020 MMRC Research Rounds.
Statistical Approaches to Describing and Analysing Likert Scale Data - MMRC Research Rounds
We often use survey questions with Likert scale responses, such as: Strongly Disagree / Disagree / Neutral / Agree / Strongly Agree…but how do you best describe the ‘average’ response of a group of people, or compare it over time, or with another group? Everything you wanted to know about Likert, but were afraid to ask.
Watch MMRC Fellow Jimmy Hu, PhD candidate in statistics, discuss approaches to describing and analysing Likert scale data from the May 26, 2020 MMRC Research Rounds.
Development and Evaluation of Point of Care Ultrasound Course for Midwives - MSH Rounds
On January 1st, 2018, the College of Midwives of Ontario expanded the scope of practice for registered midwives to now perform ultrasounds for clients to enhance maternal care during pregnancy and postpartum. It is essential that midwives are properly educated to perform ultrasounds as well as to be able to competently analyze the data presented from the sonographic images.
Watch Dr. Beth Murray-Davis, Carol Bernacci, and Bronte Johnston's presentation on May 5, 2020 at the Markham Stouffville Hospital Alongside Midwifery Rounds.
Dr. Julia Abelson - Principles for Public and Patient Engagement
Dr. Julia Abelson's research program has been guided by a long-standing interest in how the public interacts with health systems as patients, community members, voters, and taxpayers. These interests have provided the foundation for numerous research studies focused on the design and evaluation of processes for engaging the public and patients in health system decision-making. Through her research, she has developed productive and long-standing partnerships with a wide range of policymakers and health system managers at the provincial and regional governance levels across the country. She is regularly invited to advise policy decision makers and health system managers on the design, implementation, and evaluation of public engagement processes.
Dr. Abelson, Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence & Impact and with the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Analysis, Director, Health Policy PhD Program, and Lead, Public & Patient Engagement Collaborative, leads this MMRC workshop to provide an overview of public and patient engagement concepts and tools and to interactively explore their application to the midwifery research context with key MMRC members.
Watch Dr. Abelson's presentation at the MMRC Research Workshop held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021.
